Prayer for Bible Study

Eternal God,

who caused all holy scriptures

to be written for our learning,

grant us so to hear them,

read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them,

that we may embrace and ever hold fast

the blessed hope of everlasting life,

which you have given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

The holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ

according to Mark.

1 As Jesus came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!" 2 Then Jesus asked him, "Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down." 3 When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, 4 "Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?" 5 Then Jesus began to say to them, "Beware that no one leads you astray. 6 Many will come in my name and say, 'I am he!' and they will lead many astray. 7 When you hear of wars and rumours of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. 8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birth pangs.     Mark 13:1-8  (N.R.S.V.)

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

Book of Common Praise 466

We love the place, O God,

Wherein thine honour dwells;

The joy of thine abode

All earthly joys excell

It is the house of prayer,

Wherein thy servants meet;

And thou, O Lord, art there

Thy chosen flock to greet

Not one stone will be left here upon another;

All will be thrown down.

SILENCE to think about the demise of our church buildings.

Incarnate God, you dwell in human flesh, Jesus our Saviour.

We will strive for justice and peace among all people,

and respect the dignity of every human being. (B.A.S. 159)

SILENCE to confess and repent our thoughts, words, deeds of this past week

for the ways we have not respected the dignity of others.

We will continue in the apostles' teaching and fellowship,

in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers; With God's help.

We will persevere in resisting evil and, whenever we fall into sin,

repent and return to the Lord; With God's help.

We will proclaim by word and example the good news of God in Christ; With God's help.

We will seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving our neighbour as ourselves;

With God's help.

Other prayers, thanksgivings, and remembrances are read.

Let your light so shine before others

that they may see our good works

and glorify our Father in heaven.

With thankful hearts we say, Amen.
